Car insurance when moving house

Practical cover questions while changing address or using another vehicle.

THE SHORT VERSION

Practical cover questions while changing address or using another vehicle.

01 / THE DETAILS

Your location may matter

An insurer may need your current address and where the vehicle is kept. If you are moving, do not enter an old address simply because it appears on older documents. Supply the details requested and clarify which address applies for the proposed cover period.

02 / THE DETAILS

Borrowing a vehicle to move

If you will drive a friend’s car or a larger vehicle, check the exact vehicle class and proposed use. Goods-carrying, courier or paid moving activity may not fall within ordinary private use. Temporary motor cover does not automatically include goods-in-transit protection.

03 / THE DETAILS

Avoid gaps between policies

Time your annual-policy changes and any short-term period carefully. Save confirmations, especially if a car is parked in a different location overnight.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does standard car insurance cover goods being moved?

Not automatically. Motor insurance and contents or goods protection are different.

Can I insure a rented van as a car?

Do not assume so. Check the vehicle class and the actual insurer product.
