Driving a family member’s car

What changes when the vehicle belongs to someone in your household?

THE SHORT VERSION

What changes when the vehicle belongs to someone in your household?

01 / THE DETAILS

Family ownership does not remove insurance rules

Being related to the owner or living at the same address does not automatically cover you to drive. Compare the option of being named on the existing policy with an insurer-accepted separate short-term arrangement.

02 / THE DETAILS

Check who uses the car most

Be accurate about normal drivers and the intended use. A temporary policy should not be used to misrepresent who is actually the main driver under an annual arrangement. Questions about garaging, mileage or commuting may be relevant.

03 / THE DETAILS

Before a one-off journey

Confirm the period and correct vehicle registration. If plans change or the driver changes, do not assume the policy changes with them. Look for explicit confirmation of the accepted driver and dates.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does living at the same address make me insured?

No. You need valid insurance for your driving, whatever the family relationship.

Is a separate temporary policy always cheaper?

Not necessarily. Costs depend on the insurer, risk details and duration.
