INSURANCE GUIDES / EXPLAINED

Named driver or separate insurance?

Compare two common approaches to occasional driving of someone else’s car.

THE SHORT VERSION

Compare two common approaches to occasional driving of someone else’s car.

01 / THE DETAILS

Named-driver addition

A vehicle owner may ask their annual insurer to add another driver. The insurer decides the terms, dates and any changes to price. This keeps the driving arrangement within the existing policy when accepted.

02 / THE DETAILS

Separate temporary policy

An eligible driver may instead buy a separate policy for a defined period. It is not the same as becoming a named driver on the owner’s existing annual policy. Acceptance and the interaction between policies depend on the providers’ rules.

03 / THE DETAILS

How to make the choice

Compare total cost, duration, permitted use, excess and effect on the owner. A quick price comparison without reading the driver restrictions can lead to the wrong choice.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does a separate policy remove the owner’s insurance?

Not automatically. The arrangements remain subject to their terms and any disclosure obligations.

Which option is always cheaper?

Neither. Prices and conditions vary with the specific risk.
